With the half term holidays upon us, the NHS in Milton Keynes is reminding everyone of the range of health services available and tips on keeping your family well.

With the recent cold weather there has been an increase in cold and flu viruses that can spread quickly, so it’s never been more important to keep you and your family healthy. To help prevent cold and flu, make sure you and your family wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap, and throw away all used tissues. Catch It, Bin It, Kill It is the motto.

Dr Nicola Smith, GP and Chair of NHS Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “We want parents and children to enjoy half term and make sure they are not affected by the common illnesses at this time of year such as tummy upsets or colds and flu. Using soap and water to clean hands of any germs will help stop the spread of infection. Having a well-stocked medicine cupboard in case you do become poorly will help relieve symptoms.”

It is also important that the most appropriate service is used in the event of illness. Common winter illnesses such as colds and flu can be treated at home with paracetamol, rest and sleep, keeping warm and keep hydrated, or by asking your pharmacist for advice and remedies.

You can help protect your child from flu by making sure they have the free flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is free on the NHS for:

  • children over the age of 6 months with a long-term health condition
  • children aged 2 and 3 on 31 August 2017 – that is, born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2015
  • children in reception class and school years 1, 2,  3 and 4
  • Children aged between 6 months and 2 years of age who are eligible for the flu vaccine should have the flu jab.

To help keep you littles ones healthy, Change for Life have some 10-minute Shake Ups, which will give your children bursts of fun and energy and they also have some ideas for sports and active hobbies which don’t need to take up a lot of time or money.
